Safety Gate Guide
Childproofing at home: How to make stairs and doorways safe for babies & pets
When children learn to crawl or pets explore the house, your home suddenly becomes a place full of exciting adventures—and potential hazards. Stairways, open hallways, and the kitchen in particular are areas that can quickly become safety hazards.
Why a safety gate is essential
A high-quality safety gate is the most effective barrier for protecting curious explorers from falls and unsecured areas. It’s not just for toddlers aged 6 to 24 months, but equally for pets (such as dogs or cats) that should not enter certain areas, such as the upper floor or home office.
The benefits of drill-free safety gates
Many people are reluctant to drill holes in walls, tiles, or wooden frames, especially in rental apartments or when dealing with high-quality door frames. Modern pressure-mount systems offer the perfect solution:
-
🔩 No damage: The gate is secured using four adjustment screws and pressure alone—no drilling tools, wall plugs, or damage to walls.
-
🔄 Maximum flexibility: Installation is quick, and if needed, the gate can be removed without leaving a trace or moved to another doorway.
-
🛡️ High stability: Despite requiring no drilling, the sturdy metal construction ensures a firm, secure fit for everyday use.
What should you look for when buying?
-
The right measurements & fit: Measure the opening (doorway, hallway, or passage) precisely beforehand. For standard 80 cm-wide doorways, a basic gate with an adjustable installation width of 75 cm to 82 cm is ideal, as it can be adjusted continuously. Extensions, available separately, can be used for wider openings.
-
Safe installation location & stair safety: Take care when installing a gate on stairs: At the top of the staircase, the safety gate should always be positioned at least 20 cm before the top step for safety reasons and always installed using the wall mounting cups provided. At the bottom of the stairs, it can be mounted directly.
-
Material quality & safety lock: Look for sturdy materials such as painted metal and a double safety lock (dual-locking mechanism), so toddlers cannot open the gate on their own.
-
Easy to use (auto-close & one-handed operation): Everyday life often calls for quick action—a one-handed opening mechanism, that swings in both directions and closes automatically (auto-close) when opened to less than 90°, offers maximum convenience.
